Talk about closing the gate after, long after, the cows come home, but yes, ’tis true, the Treo 700wx has finally gotten a Windows Mobile 6 update. The update delivers support for Microsoft Vista, HTML mail, Office 2007, Inbox search, grins, and lollipops for all. Of course, coming from Windows Mobile 5, this will be a serious day of celebrating for Palm users over at Verizon — and it’s actually surprising that this happened — as the usual response “please upgrade your device” has been passed over. We already know that the iPhone won’t have any issues functioning on the other side of the pond, but an interesting suggestion from the CEO of Carphone Warehouse has got Europeans looking a bit more closely at how things will eventually be ran in their neck of the woods. It was stated that “in order for the iPhone to function correctly, there is a requirement for Apple servers to be placed deep in the operator’s network,” which has led some to believe that Apple could have a “a non-GSM, non-standard way of authenticating its phone.” If true, this would likely make operators much more willing to subsidize the handset if necessary when competition from rivals inevitably catches up, but it sure won’t make users happy who enjoy “unlocking and reflashing phone operating systems to get around operator device tie-ins.”

We’re all quite aware of just how proud Option is of its HSUPA offerings, and while it has raised the bar before in terms of sheer speed, the company is once again kicking out a new way to get your lappie connected to blazing fast internet without a WiFi hotspot in sight. The diminutive GlobeSurfer iCON HSUPA boasts a compact, USB stick design, and even includes a swivel connector as to play nice with just about every USB nook and cranny out there. Aside from touting 7.2Mbps of downstream capacity and 2Mbps on the upbeat, the GlobeSurfer looks to provide web access for those not already sold on the firm’s ExpressCard options. Users can purportedly expect “plug ‘n play” abilities, backwards compatibility with EDGE/GPRS/GSM data connections, tri-band / quad-band support, and a wide range of OS support that includes Windows Vista and OS X. No word just yet on price or availability, but we sincerely hope Option doesn’t keep the USB brethren in the house waiting too awfully long for these high-speed luxuries.
