One of the premier racing franchises on mobile has made its debut on the iPhone and it’s quite astounding. It quickly pulls out all the stops to harness the phone’s capabilities so much that it easily becomes a must-have for iPhone gamers
Asphalt 4 delivers 28 licensed cars – from Ferrari to Chevrolet, including other rides like motorcycles and police cruisers. The five different modes available are Race, Duel, Cop Chase, Cash Attack and Beat’em All. These are nothing new to the series in most instances, well new to you if you’ve never played the series before, but the racing does takes place through nine different cities from all over the world.
The uniqueness of Asphalt 4 begins with the control scheme which, by now you should already have guessed, uses the iPhone’s distinct inputs. There are actually three control types, two that implement the touchscreen and the other using the accelerometer. You can slide back and forth to turn the steering wheel, touch both ends of the screen to move left or right, or tilt the phone accordingly to sway through traffic. All three of them can be switched quite easily and work swell, though I preferred using both ends of the screen for tighter controls.
Racing around the tracks is quite challenging with aggressive opponents and cops chasing you down after reaching a WANTED level by smashing into other vehicles. As you succeed in winning the races, however, money is earned to modify the vehicle or purchase others and even your very own female muse.
Perhaps the most important inclusion in the game, outside of the lengthy and elaborate courses decked out with top notch graphics, is the exclusive Wi-Fi multiplayer mode. If you’ve got the hook up, you can challenge friends or other Wi-Fi players to some swift racing. It’s about time!
Asphalt 4 probably doesn’t deliver a first-of-a-kind experience to gaming in general, but it certainly does so for mobile gaming and specifically a great experience on the iPhone. There are tons of games available on the App store, some free and others pushing the boundaries of what you’d actually pay for a mobile game, but this one is certainly worth the price of admission.
