So what’s more creative, a disposable cellphone or a dual-mode GSM / CDMA WinMo smartphone? Tough call, but it’s a very real question seeing how Hop-on apparently makes both. This here is the HOP2001, a phone with a spec sheet that sounds just a little too good to be true: triband HSDPA 3.6, CDMA (though EV-DO doesn’t appear to be supported), a 3 megapixel autofocus cam, 256MB of ROM and 128MB of RAM, integrated GPS, microSD expansion, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi, and Windows Mobile 6 (never mind the fact that the shoddy rendering shows Windows Mobile 5, we suppose). Hop-on proudly proclaims the HOP2001 to be “AT&T / Verizon ready,” though we’ll hold off on proclaiming this one of the most feature-packed WinMo handsets on the market until we see some actual units in use.

So-called Long Term Evolution — GSM’s chosen warpath for the next generation of data networks — has been getting its groove on in labs for some time now, so Nokia Siemens decided it was high time to kick things up a notch by taking it out into the wild. The wireless infrastructure joint venture deployed an LTE base station in Berlin on the nascent 2.6GHz band and sent cars equipped with test equipment as far as one kilometer away to check performance, and put simply, the results were good: 173Mbps good, in the best cases. Of course, commercial deployment of LTE is still years away — Nokia Siemens makes a point of listing 2010 as the target right in its press release — but it’s good to hear that things are coming along swimmingly, and we’re sure Verizon would agree.

Samsung’s new P720 and F490 handsets already made themselves known at a recent press event in the Ukraine but, given that we unfortunately couldn’t make the trek there ourselves, we didn’t exactly get that great a look at ‘em. Now thanks to the folks at Mobile-Notes, however, we’ve got some better pics of each of the handsets, along with a video that shows them off from every angle (check it out after the break). In case you missed the original announcement, the P720 and F490 pack 3 and 5-megapixel cameras respectively, along with dual SIM card slots on the former and a 432 x 240 touchscreen on the former. Both will also be available in the first half of next year, with the F490 trickling out sometime in the first quarter for $600, and the P720 following in Q2 for $500.

In the process of spelunking through Danger’s latest software development kit for the Sidekick, one enterprising developer discovered a handful of dormant functions for controlling video playback. That got us to thinking: on the Sidekick LX’s glorious widescreen display, isn’t video support a totally obvious feature? Can’t you just imagine perusing YouTube clip after YouTube clip — or better yet, dropping a movie on the microSD card? We’re being told that the specific functions aren’t usable yet, but it’s pretty reasonable to think that a future update could grace the LX with full support. And hey, Danger, if that wasn’t in your plans, may we suggest you consider it?
