In another classic “chicken -or-the-egg” type of conundrum, a newly released study is claiming that instead of a so-called “cellphone addiction” causing people depression and lower self-esteem, as we’d previously heard, the supposed addiction may actually be triggered by those very same negative feelings. In a study of school-aged South Korean children, Dr. Jee Hyan Ha found that those students who used their phones the most (90 or more times a day, including SMS) also tended to score higher on a psychological test intended to measure a person’s level of depression. Although none of the students’ scores reached the level of clinical depression, the heaviest users were observed to have significantly more self-identity issues than average, suggesting to researchers that communicating via cellphone made the “addicts” feel popular. So which is it: does heavy cellphone use lead to depression, or does depression lead to heavy cellphone use — or is it just a vicious cycle with no end and no beginning?

The number, 666 6666, sold for 10m Qatari riyals or £1.5m. (1.5 Million)

The previous record holder was Chinese number 8888 8888, which sold for £270,000. The Cantonese word for eight sounds very similar to the word for rich. It was bought by Sichuan Airlines.

The auction started at a million riyals and interest quickly narrowed from eight bidders to just two, according to Kuwaiti News Agency (KUNA).

The auction was organised by national telco Qtel, which has run two previous auctions and plans to run another in September.

When BenQ-Siemens was formed we must admit that we had some doubts about the operation, but in truth BenQ-Siemens have been able to come out with an impressive product range with some nice looking handsets that (in our view) have a real chance of gaining some market share.

The latest BenQ-Siemens handset is the EF71 which will be sold under the slightly cumbersome name of “BenQ-Siemens Q-fi EF71″.

Talking on the phone is no longer a private exchange. What if you could carry a phone booth with you and set it up when you needed to converse in private?

Out of the many gadgets and devices that have been featured on these pages over the years, the last one you’d think someone would make improvements upon would be the personal cellphone booth invented last year by Nick Rodrigues, which seems to perform its intended duty almost perfectly. Well NYU student Jenny Chowdhury, the same person who brought that team-building Mobile Assassins game, decided to take the mobile phone booth to the next level by making it both lighter and more private. Instead of the folding plastic and metal design built by Rodrigues, Chowdhury decided to use Chinese merchant bags to stitch together her cleverly-named, full-length “cell atlantic” phonebooth, as a symbol of the structure’s nomadic nature. Chowdhury hopes that people seeing or using the booth will take a moment to consider the impact of cellphones on our daily lives, while forcing them to stand still and concentrate on a call instead of engaging in the usual multitasking. Samsung has combined two popular cell phone form factors into one design, inventing the sliding-clamshell.

Having advantages of both sliding and folding phones, the new form is built from a soft cover, allowing the body to slide lengthwise as well as become extended and folded.

According to the patent application, clamshell phones have an advantage in portability due to their compact size; however the screen is typically very small. By contrast, sliding phones have large screens, but are often large. Additionally, LCDs on sliders are typically exposed without a protective cover, making them more susceptible to damage. Samsung’s sliding-clamshell invention attempts to solve these problems by having a large, protected display while keeping a compact size.

Cingular and Motorola today announced Phone Tattoos for the Motorola RAZR V3 and Motorola SLVR line-up (L2, L6, and L7), allowing customers to change the look of their handsets to reflect their mood, style, and interests.

Phone Tattoos come in a 3-pack of pre-designed stickers created in various colors and patterns. Customers can choose from two different packs that include a sticker in:

- Carbon Fiber, Grey Camouflage and Starburst Blue
- Pink Plaid, Pink Camouflage and Starburst Pink
