TuneBuckle

With iPods so ubiquitous as to make them the latest fashion accessory, it was only a matter of time until someone figured out a way to make the iPod a . . . well, real fashion accessory. Hence, the TuneBuckle!

Designed for the new, uber-cool iPod Nano, the TuneBuckle from ProductM is a real belt make of quality leather with a genuine high-grade aluminum belt buckle that you can snap your iPod Nano into, and then run the headphone cords up your shirt and voila! — tunes and style. Or is that style and tunes? It’s so hard to tell with kids these days.

But just how much will the TuneBuckle set you back? 50 lean bucks, is all — and you get your choice of a white or black belt to match your white or black iPod Nano, and with the increasing availability of cordless headphones for portable music players, you’ll also have the option of listening wirelessly to your music collection while your Nano sits in your belt buckle and helps hold your jeans up.

ProductM designer Dean Nguyen says the company hasn’t finalized distribution just yet, but is confident that the TuneBuckle will be an in-demand fashion product. Making the iPod part of the belt buckle keeps it “right there, front and center . . . It won’t get pick-pocketed there,” he says.

Palm Treo 700W

The Palm Treo 700W is the first Windows Mobile based Palm smartphone, tweaking the Palm OS to meld nicely with the Windows Mobile 5 software powered by an Intel processor. The 700W is lightweight, slimmer than its predecessors and boasts a full Qwerty keyboard for better messaging capability, plus there are new dedicated buttons for starting and ending the Windows Mobile application so that you can easily and conveniently access the information you need at the touch of one button.

But the Treo 700W isn’t just about its OS — there’s also a 1.3 megapixel still image and video camera, EV-DO (a wireless broadband standard which is faster than GPRS and EDGE) and Bluetooth connectivity for your hands-free requirements, an SD card slot, a web browser and email client, and the ability to assign up to 37 speed dials (for those business folks who know what it means to need a Rolodex).

Samsung ZX10

Samsung has paired up with Cingular to release the first 3G/UMTS (3rd Generation/Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) handset in North America. 3G/UMTS enabled mobile phones operate at greater speeds and with greater efficiency than their GSM counterparts, and the Samsung ZX10 is poised to take advantage of the capacity that the 3G network offers, while still affording users a quad-band GSM functionality for areas that are not yet 3G equipped.

TomTom Rider Portable Navigator

The TomTom Rider Navigation System is designed specifically for use on motorcycles and scooters — just put in the charged battery, mount the unit and go. It’s that simple. With a stylish exterior that’s built to enhance rather than clutter the control surface of even the nicest motorbikes, the TomTom Rider is weatherproofed, fitted with an anti-glare screen with a sun visor, and the touch screen controls have been optimized for use with chunkier motorbike gloves so that riders can access the touch screen with gloved hands.

Maps are contained on the TomTom’s 128MB flash memory, and turn by turn voice instructions in the rider’s own language are broadcast to the wireless headset, with the volume automatically adjusting according to the speed of the rider. The TomTom is easily detached for quick stowaway in your pocket once you’ve parked the bike, or even for convenient transfer to another bike.

Sony Ericsson W810

The latest big news bouncing about the ethers of the cell phone industry is Sony Ericsson’s announced release of the Sony Ericsson W810, an update to their already popular Sony Walkman Phone, the W800.

While much has been made of the fact that the upgrades aren’t drastic in nature, it’s interesting to note that what Sony Ericsson did was listen, and listen hard, to what people wanted out of the W800 as opposed to what they actually got, and the new W810 includes enough answers to the wish listing to leave any mobile phone enthusiast waltzing in his cubicle to the strains of “They heard me — they really really heard me!”

Sanyo Xacti HD1 Video Recorder

Due out in March of 2006, Sanyo’s Xacti HD1 is being billed as the world’s first high-definition compact digital media camera, capable of capturing both still photographs and video with the sharpest of clarity. Slim and light enough to easily hold and manipulate with one hand, the Xacti HD1 records a 720p high-def video image and a 5.1 megapixel still image to a swappable SD flash memory card, and then you can drop it in your jacket pocket or purse when you’re done (and since it’s a flash based memory, there’s no hard drive to worry about jostling).

Featuring a pop-up flash with improved brightness, an infrared remote control, a voice recorder mode and the ability to shoot video in widescreen format, this is one little piece of technology that’ll point, shoot and play like a pro at any occasion, from parties to weddings to road trips and more. It’s so delightfully small that you’ll be able to take it almost anywhere.

LG VX9800

While everyone else seems to be going micro these days, LG has bucked the trend and introduced the VX9800, a big hunk of a mobile that’s stuffed with functions and capability. Short of a full PDA or BlackBerry, the LG VX9800 is as fully featured a mobile phone as a user can find, and the full Qwerty keyboard included in the VX9800 will thrill the text messaging fan while most anyone else will be impressed with the VX9800’s excellent imaging, audio and connectivity capabilities.

Samsung MM-A900

Now that 2005 is here and gone, the one lesson that mobile phone manufacturers seem to have learned is that thin is so very very in. What with Motorola’s RAZR topping the market in all its various forms (black, pink, gold and wildly German), Samsung has produced its own answer to the consumer demand for slim, ultra-portable phones that easily slide into pocket, purse or pack — the Samsung MM-A900, or the Blade.

Barely thicker than the RAZR, and crafted out of a sturdy magnesium metal alloy, Samsung’s Blade distinguishes itself from the competition through its accessible surface controls and extensive suite of applications. Despite the fact that it looks enough like the RAZR to pass as its first cousin, Samsung has done its homework on what consumers want in a trim fashion phone, and while Motorola is coasting along on its laurels, the MM-A900 fits the new year bill.
